I didn't like this wine at first. Two years later I came to love it. The alcohol is no longer dominant, the wine has opened up, and the fruit has come forward. It is drinking very nicely for an $8/bottle wine.

Alcohol overwhelms this wine. Through the burn, notes of blackberry, licorice, green bell pepper and black pepper.

Initially harsh, alcohol and fruit not melded. Opened up a bit, but still not persuasive.

So you might get the idea from my other tasting notes that I like everything I drink .. this is not the case lol.

I bought the 2009 Balance - Red Field Blend because of the write ups and their organic farming techniques. Unfortunately I intensely dislike this wine.

I cant get past the nose which honestly smells like they aged this in barrels filled with hay. The aroma was so repugnant to me that we opened up the second bottle thinking the first might have been corked.

Perhaps the nose disrupted my ability to taste however the wine also tasted like a barn smells. I hate to sound so negative but it was truly overpowering.

Not something I would purchase again.

Tart cherries - a bit less full bodied than I expected. More balanced on the second day (no pun intended)

Been too long to score it or write a descriptive note; but this was a really well-made and delicious field blend, especially at this price point!

Got this bottle at Total Wine & More for about $18 when the winery was pouring various bottles at an in-store appearance. If my feeble memory serves me correctly, Jeff (the steward from the winery pouring their bottles) told me that this field blend was predominately Zinfandel. If my memory is so feeble, how did I remember Jeff's name from a year ago?!?! Because he signed the bottle!
For a sub-$20 red blend, this is a nice wine. The bouquet provides hints of dark fruits like plums and blackberries along with a touch of earth and oak.
The bouquet turned-out to be VERY revealing: there was indeed plenty of black fruit up front (plums and blackberries), along with some black pepper (classic Zin characteristics). This is a creamy red with very smooth tannins. I never would have guessed that the alcohol content was 15.5%; the wine's balance/structure hid that level of alcohol with wonderful finese. My only complaint about this wine is that the flavor profile isn't terribly complex. Yes, there's plenty of black fruit and some black pepper, but there wasn't much earth/terrior present. And while I adore black pepper to death, I would have enjoyed some other herbs to join the party.
Northern California is becoming quite the booming wine country (no, I'm not referring to Napa or Sonoma; I'm referring to the counties north of them, like Lake and Mendocino Counties). The biodynamic grapes for this wine came from Mendocino County. I also enjoy the red wines from Vigilance Winery in Lake County. The wines from these REAL Northern California counties can't quite compare to the wines from Napa and Sonoma, but they are good wines at very good prices. This wine would be a nice introduction to somebody who has never had a red wine from those two counties. Well done, Heath Dolan.
